this just in---turns out vegan world in studio city was shut down (although later re-opened) for GROSS CONTAMINATION OF UTENSILS and VERMIN INFESTATION!

oh barf. here is a letter i got from a reader with a link to the health report...

"So I went to Vegan World once, the one on Ventura in Studio City. And then I took a friend there recently. She got a bad case of food poisoning from eating there.

I felt so stupid for taking her there, especially because she's not vegan, and she went on and on about how "this wouldn't have happened at Subway." (I just stayed quiet, I mean what am I going to say to that )

I later went on Yelp and found a link to the restaurant closures list, where it turns out Vegan World was shut down for "gross contamination of utensils" and also "vermin infestation."

dude this shit happens aallll the time. (vegan and otherwise) bright spot in silver lake (tons of vegan options) closed for cocroach infestation. there's a spanish restaurant a block from where i live closed for rodent infestation. it's so gross and i would never think about going to these places, but here's an odd point made by a friend of mine: if you go back as soon as they re-open that's when it's going to be the cleanest because the health dept was just there. baaa haa haaa! gross!!!

I don't think you should go back to any restaurant that was shut down for nasty reasons because obviously the people there didn't give two shits about your health or mice pooping on everything, do you really think they wash their hands even after pooping themselves? Always feel free to ask to see the kitchen. Look for plastic gloves on the people handling food.

Well, Phillippe's downtown was recently closed for a few weeks due to cockroaches. Walked past it today after the Dragon Parade and it was packed. Even passed a lady practically running for the door as she exclaimed, "This is it! This is where we're going, you guys! Phillippe's! Just wait, you'll see..."

I think restaurants can pretty much get away with anything, with the attention span of people these days.

Talk to Kelly about restaurant closures. She'll give you an earful. Especially since she just finished up an internship w/the Pasadena Public Health Department and went on restaurant inspection ride-alongs.

are there any vegan restuarants i should avoid because they are so dirty...?

She didn't visit any specific vegan restaurants but she was only in Pasadena (they didn't go to My Vegan). So I guess I'm no help. But she can point out stuff to look for that could be a violation, and what's a big deal and what's not.
