this is mine and my parents' cat, named ping ping. (though i don't live with them, i still consider her to be my cat too.) my mom rescued her after her pregnant mommy was dumped out at my grandparents' house in the country. she isn't vegan but she is a very loving, intelligent kitty cat... not to mention spoiled! (: i miss her all the time.

We have some parrots and they're vegan, though we really would love a dog, but don't want to force veganism onto an animal that is naturally carnivorous.

Currently thinking of a pig alternative. They can be trained in a lot of the same ways as a mutt and be just as loving.

a lot of people are vegan and have pets. does that mean the pet should be vegan as well? what are your thoughts? i know different animals have different requirements. what do you think?

I must confess I feel very confused about this. I have no pets (and I have never had any pets.) My parents have three very loved shelter-rescue dogs.

I'm trying to become vegan (from being vegetarian) because I am really concerned about animal cruelty and I don't want animals to suffer. If I were to adopt a cat or a dog, then won't I still be contributing to animal-suffering every time I purchase their pet-food?

So I am not sure about that.

Since I feel so lost on these issues, my current solution is just to not have a pet at all.

However, it might be awesome to adopt a herbivore pet that needs a home.

I'd love to have a dog too! I'm just wondering how to handle the pet-food situation in a cruelty-free way?

Pigs are adorable! And apparently so intelligent too! However, pigs are omnivores like dogs I believe?

Not to plug my own blog, but I wrote a post about this a while ago:

http://blog.thevegancollection.com/2008 ... dogs-cats/

That is specifically information about dogs and dog food. I've lived w/vegan dogs for the past 10+ years and they have been some of the healthiest/happiest I've seen. But I'm sure buying packages of Tofurkey specifically for them helps in keeping them happy. :D

I have no problem feeding dogs an all veg diet, but I'm sure there are more informed people out there on the subject than myself. I'm just preaching from my experiences.

^ Thanks for the link to the blog post you wrote.

I am still very extremely confused about the whole situation, and not sure what is the right thing to do. I love animals so much, and dogs and pigs are omnivores like we humans are. So I wonder if vets and animal doctors might eventually let us know what would be a proper and good diet for them, so they can get all their nutrition and such.

I don't believe that it is right to force your food choices on an animal.

IMHO, if you want to have a carnivore as a pet like a cat and are not willing to allow it to eat a balanced carnivore diet and feel the need to force vegan values on it, then don't have a pet. Or you could be fair and lay some meat down and some veggies and let it decide for itself.
