soft serve machines are notorious for harboring unsafe levels of bacteria!

a pretty reliable vegan (@panasonicyouth) announced on twitter that he went in and the manager straight up told him the soy ice cream wasn't vegan. i dunno, maybe they did change it....!

wish there was a way to find out. until i hear otherwise, i am staying away just to be safe.

you're right I talked to the owner on the phone today (he wrote me back and gave me his #) and their supplier ran out at some point and they are working to reestablish a soy option. I told him to give Chicago Soy Dairy a try over at Carvels in BH.

Thank you all so much!!! I have been poring through your suggestions. Everyone was very helpful. My son is going to be thrilled he's going to get his soy drumstix! :) (and it's fine if they are just vegetarian for him...he and my husband are pretty much overtly vegan but they are definitely more relaxed/non label-reading vegans as far as dairy/eggs are concerned...my 4 year old wants to know what is in everything - as do I, and my 3 year old is still TBD, ha)

As far as what was more important - sightseeing or food...well...that's hard to say...kind of food, although like I said, last time it was a pain not planning it out beforehand with our activities. I think we are going to stay 2 nights at Anaheim for our Disney day, then we're going to head up to Sequoia for a couple of days and end up at Santa Monica. Thanks for the Ambrose suggestion - am considering it! We are also going to Animal Acres for the meat-out/open house event I guess?

Thanks, again. I'll let ya know where we went/what I thought

and oh, yeah...when you said you go to Costa Mesa Native Foods when you go to Disney...we actually did that the day after we went to Disney last time, and i remember it took FOREVER. Maybe we took a dumb road? Or went during rush hour? Is there an easy way to get there?

All roads are dumb in Orange County. But yeah it was probably rush hour of some sort. We've done the Native Foods drive a few times now and usually get lucky with an evening drive over after D-land. That might be tough with 3 tired kids though. If we're being lazy one of us will just "make a run for the border". Not very healthy or fun, but it fills us up quick.

Hope you have an awesome trip :)
